Kello provides an in-depth analysis of the accuracy of mechanical watches compared to the iOS system clock through the utilization of a microphone.
How Kello Operates:
- All mechanically controlled watches are engineered to commence and cease thousands of times within every hour. A fragment of the energy expended during this repetitive motion is converted into sound energy, creating an audible "tick-tock" noise. Kello gauges the consistency of this sound against the highly precise internal time signal of iOS devices, such as the iPhone, showcasing the resulting timekeeping variance.
Supported Watch Frequencies:
- Kello can automatically identify the frequency of the watch under observation based on eight of the most prevalent frequencies employed in mechanical watches. These frequencies are standard across low, medium, and high-grade mechanical timepieces, encompassing the vast majority of mechanical watches produced over the last century. The supported frequencies include:
- 14,400 bph
- 16,200 bph
- 18,000 bph
- 19,800 bph
- 21,600 bph
- 25,200 bph
- 28,800 bph
- 36,000 bph
Recommended Hardware:
- Kello functions optimally with an external microphone exhibiting exceptional frequency response between 10,000 and 20,000 Hz.
Determining if Your Watch is Mechanically Regulated:
- There are four straightforward methods to ascertain if your watch is mechanical and can be used with Kello:
- Inspect the inscriptions on your timepiece. If the term "quartz" is present anywhere on the watch, it is not mechanical. However, if "automatic" or "shock-proof" is visible on the watch, there is a strong probability that it is mechanical and can be assessed by Kello.
- If your watch features a seconds hand, observe its movement frequency. If it moves once per second, it is likely non-mechanical. Conversely, if it moves multiple times per second or sweeps continuously in a fluid motion, it is probably a mechanical watch suitable for assessment by Kello.
- Rotate the crown—used for setting watch hands—while fully pressed in. A smooth rotation indicates a non-mechanical watch. However, a ratcheting sound upon crown rotation suggests a mechanical watch that can be measured using Kello.
- Bring the watch close to your ear and listen closely. If you hear a sound approximately once per second, it is unlikely to be mechanical. Conversely, a consistent ticking noise indicates a high probability of a mechanical watch suitable for evaluation by Kello.
